Oct/Nov Update: A Legacy Remembered, A Park Reimagined

With Heavy Hearts: Remembering Our Friend, Jerry Kral

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of our friend and founding board member, Jerry Kral. Jerry believed wholeheartedly in the power of nature to transform urban life—and his own backyard was living proof of that vision. His insight, kindness, and steady support helped shape Greentopia from the very beginning.

To everyone who donated to Greentopia in Jerry’s name: thank you. Your generosity honors the legacy of a true champion for greenspace and community.

Jerry showed us that when you plant seeds—ideas or perennials—beautiful things grow.

A Neighbor’s Gift: RG&E Donates $5,000 to Greentopia

Our neighbors at RG&E have long stood alongside Greentopia—from early EcoFest days to the FlourGarden on Browns Race, the Ecodistrict draft plan, and Dinner on the Bridge. In a surprise announcement, RG&E made a $5,000 donation to support our mission.

We celebrate the environmental progress and achievements of Greentopia. “RG&E is pleased to support its efforts as we all take a step towards a cleaner future for generations to come.
— Al Langland, president of RG&E.

The Big Reveal: Framework Plan for High Falls State Park

On October 21, community members filled the auditorium at MCC’s downtown campus to preview the Framework Plan for High Falls State Park. We were honored to welcome Tom Alworth, Executive Deputy Director of NY State Parks, along with the Mayor and local officials.

Envisioned as a 40-acre urban oasis, the park weaves together recreation, history, and ecology. Pending remediation milestones, construction could begin in 2027, with phased openings as sections of the lower gorge are completed.

Highlights from the Framework Plan

  • Rim parking + 9 gateways into the gorge

  • Trails and switchbacks, plus two main roads for vehicle access

  • Playgrounds, multipurpose fields, pedestrian bridges, and overlooks

  • Food truck locations and gathering spaces

  • The High Falls Heritage Trail (2.5 miles) connecting 14 historic resources across the park

Community in Bloom: A Summer Send-Off at U-Pick

We closed the growing season with a joyful U-Pick—a final celebration of summer flowers and the people who love them. Thank you to everyone who joined us, arranged bouquets, and helped our fields end the season in full color. Special appreciation to New York State Assemblywoman Sarah Clark for her ongoing support of green spaces and community programming.
